Singaporeans head to the polls in less than 24 hours
Today is ‘cooling-off’ for Singapore after nine days of intensive campaigning by candidates contesting in the 2015 general election (GE) set for tomorrow.
The Election Department has issued an advisory reminding candidates to be mindful of how they conduct themselves in public, and to exercise due care to avoid any action that might be perceived to be a campaign.
Candidates from nine political parties including the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) are competing for 16 Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) and 13 Single Member Constituencies (SMCs) to fill 89 parliamentary seats.
The eight other contesting parties are the Workers Party (WP), Singapore People’s Party (SPP), Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), National Solidarity Party (NSP), Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA), Reform Party (RP), Singaporeans First (SF) and People’s Power Party (PPP).
In the fray as well are two Independent candidates, Han Hui Hui and Samir Salim Neji who hope to score in the GE dubbed most comprehensive and crucial in Singapore’s history since 1965.
All eyes will be on several hotly contested seats, among them, the five-member Al-Junied GRC and four-member East Coast GRC which PAP and WP will fight for.
Tanjong Pagar, a stronghold of PAP during the years of late founder and prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, is now being contested.
PAP incumbents will be facing a five-man SingFirst team in Tanjong Pagar’s first electoral contest since 1991.
Meanwhile, several issues such as cost of living, immigration, transport, wage gap, housing and health, were raised during the campaign.
