Police will investigate the burning of effigies of DAP leaders at a Kota Baru Umno event, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said.

Khalid said the effigy burners will be investigated the same way those who stepped on a picture of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak at the Bersih 4 rally last month were probed.

“Yes, we are waiting for reports to be lodged and we will initiate investigation.

"It will be the same as when we investigated those who stepped on prime minister's photo," The Malaysian Insider quoted him as saying at the Bukit Aman police headquarters today.

DAP Youth earlier lodged a police report on the matter.

A video circulating online shows Kota Baru Umno chief Mohd Fatmi Che Salleh giving a fiery speech where he condemns electoral watchdog Bersih.

'Fight for our religion, race and country'

After that effigies of DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and his father and DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, wearing Bersih 4 T-shirts were torched.

A mock altar with the photographs of the two leaders was also set up, complete with joss sticks and fruit offerings, symbolising the Chinese custom of worshiping ancestors.

In the video clip, Fatmi urged party members to participate in the Sept 16 gathering in order to uphold the dignity of the Malays.

"The people of Kota Baru must fight, fight for our religion, race and country," he said.

Fatmi, who is Najib’s former political secretary, also criticised the two DAP leaders and organisers of Bersih 4, whom he accused wanted to divide the Malays.

"Burning their effigies is a symbol of our protest, we are against everything about Bersih which are just lies,” he added.

Mohd Fatmi admitted to Malaysiakini that he was at the event but said he was not the one who set the effigies alight.
