The police have yet to receive any applications for a permit to hold another rally in Petaling Street, said deputy inspector-general of police Noor Rashid Ibrahim.

Noor Rashid said he is made to understand that there had been calls for a rally in Petaling Street this weekend, but the police are unsure of the purpose of the rally.

Nevertheless, he assured that the police is ready to handle any assembly at the popular tourist attraction.

"Whatever it is, we know that the rally will be stopped, and we have taken necessary action to manage this rally," he told a press conference at Bukit Aman today.

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) yesterday said it, too, has yet to receive any requests to hold a rally there, nor does it have any knowledge of such a rally.

Even so, mayor Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz vowed to put a stop to any such rally.

“It definitely cannot be held in Petaling Street and I will not allow anyone to gather there...it is against the law. If you want to gather, it must be in a suitable location and you must apply for a permit,” Bernama quoted him as saying.

On a separate matter, Noor Rashid (photo) told reporters that Malaysian police has arrested eight people so far in connection to the bombings in Bangkok on Aug 17 that left 20 people dead and 100 people injured.

Of the four Malaysians, they were held in suspicion for involvement in human trafficking from Thailand into Malaysia. The four foreigners are believed to be Uighurs, he said.

So far, he said there is yet to be concrete evidence to suggest that they were directly involved in the bombing.

“They have been arrested, but so far there is no confession that they were involved in the bombing in Thailand, so we are still holding them.

“The Thais have been informed about the arrests to help them conduct further investigations,” he said.
