Khairy: Le Tour de Langkawi may need another sponsor

The Youth and Sports Ministry may have to increase the grant to organise the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) or look for another organiser next year.

"I have to make a decision whether to increase the grant of RM10 million given to the organiser or change the organiser since the current organiser has stated that he would not be able to manage the tour with RM10 million... due to the drop in the value of the ringgit.

"When the value of our money drops, the cost increases because we will have to pay appearance fee to foreign teams. If we don't pay we will not get participation from world class teams," he told reporters after launching the Festival Score FitMob at the KDU College in Shah Alam today.

According to Khairy, the grant for the tour was reduced from RM20 million to RM10 million last year and Human Voyage Sdn Bhd, a private entity under Abdul Malik Mydin, was given the task to organise the event by sourcing for funds on their own.

Khairy also confirmed today that the Langkawi International Mountain Bike Challenge (LIMBC) 2015 scheduled from Oct 18-24 and organised by Human Voyage has been cancelled due to lack of funds.

"Malik came to see me and told me that the economic situation was not good and he was facing problems sourcing for funds and has to cancel the event," he said.
