When is ‘Social Media Appreciation Night’?
COMMENT On the third printed page of its Sept 1 issue, The Star featured a story about “a group of university students” who “’stormed’ LRT coaches”. One of the students was even so bold as to identify herself to the newspaper, and declared, “You don’t see many of these fun, guerilla style events in Malaysia.”
Indeed, guerilla tactics have surely been rare since the pre-Merdeka days when Chin Peng, to quote The Star ’s Sept 16, 2013 obituary , “led the MCP’s guerrilla insurgency and fought against British and Commonwealth forces to establish an independent Communist state”. The article then proceeds to note how the train occupation was part of a larger movement in which “Malaysians can take part by posting on social media”.
