MCA sec-gen waves off Ling's Najib quit urging

MCA leaders have continued to distance themselves from their former party president Ling Liong Sik's call for Prime Minister Najib Razak to step down.

MCA secretary-general Ong Ka Chuan was today reported dismissing the remark as Ling's personal opinion.

“Ling has the right to express his views. We cannot say whether it is right or wrong. I also respect him as our former leader,” China Press quoted Ong saying in a brief report.

The online report however did not elaborate.

Yesterday MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong similarly said Ling is entitled to his personal opinion and said MCA will continue to stand united with BN.

Wee also pointed out Ling is an ally of former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who has been spearheading calls for Najib to step down in order to save the economy and Umno's political future.

Ling, a former federal minister, yesterday said, "I agree with Mahathir (that Najib should resign). Because he has taken people's money and put it in his own personal accounts."

He was referring to the Wall Street Journal article claiming that RM2.6 billion from 1MDB had been deposited into Najib's personal accounts.

Umno subsequently defended the revelation, saying the money came from an Arab donor and was meant for party use.
