Policy to encourage whistleblowers to exercise rights

The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry today launched the Whistleblower Protection Policy, to give complainants confidence in coming forward if they find improper conduct in the ministry with their identities protected.

Its minister Rohani Abdul Karim said the implementation of the policy would enable whistleblowers to exercise their rights in reporting any violation of integrity activities.

She said the implementation of the policy would also provide a proper channel to lodge complaints and facilitate whistleblowers with the right way to apply for protection under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010.

"People may be afraid of getting a bad impression of themselves and their families if they expose corruption, so we hope they will be more daring to come forward.

"However, the whistleblowers cannot tell the public before making a complaint," she told reporters after launching the policy in Putrajaya today.

She said the ministry's Integrity Unit would submit complaints with reasonable grounds to regulatory agencies such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the police for investigation and protection application.

Commenting on social media users who were becoming bolder in issuing statements and hurling abusive words, Rohani said such situation was contrary to the noble values held by society.

She said previously, individuals expressed their dissatisfaction face-to-face, but now anything could be written by social media users without disclosing their identities.
