MACC: We never said 1MDB was free of investigations

Within hours after 1MDB declared today that it was not under any investigation, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said in a statement that it had never said the state-owned fund was free of any probe.

"MACC in its media statement on Sept 22 never said 1MDB was not being investigated.

"Instead, the Sept 22 statement merely said MACC was not investigating 1MDB.

"Furthermore, the statement stated that the 1MDB issue was being wholly investigated by the police and therefore, any queries should be directed to the police," MACC strategic communications director Rohaizad Yaakob said.

Rohaizad added that inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar's statement yesterday that the police are awaiting the final report from the auditor-general before concluding their investigation reinforced this stance.

"Therefore MACC hopes that no quarters will make statements that supposedly MACC has cleared those involved in the 1MDB issue," he said.

1MDB today highlighted that the attorney-general chose not prosecute the company after reviewing the investigation papers from Bank Negara.

"This confirmation by the AGC reinforces the statement by the MACC on Sept 22 that 1MDB is not under investigation ," 1MDB said.

However, 1MDB added, it was still assisting the National Audit Department to complete its final report on the 1MDB activities, which would be submitted to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
