Sivarasa says Sprint directors not briefed on toll hike

Sprint Sdn Bhd's board of directors was not informed that the highway concessionaire would be raising the toll rates, Subang MP Sivarasa Rasiah said today.

"The Sprint management implemented the toll increase pursuant to a letter received about a week ago from Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia ( LLM).

"(The letter said) the federal government was not prepared to increase its compensation anymore, that Sprint could increase the toll rates as specified in the letter and such increases must be announced by the company itself," Sivarasa said in a statement.

Appointed to Sprint's board in January as a representative of Kumpulan Perangsang Selangor (KPS), Sivarasa ( photo ) said the management did not refer the matter to the board through a circular or a meeting.

He said he objects to the toll hike, but pointed out that KPS is only a minority shareholder, with a 20 percent stake compared to with Gamuda Group's 80 percent.

Nonetheless, the PKR lawmaker said, he would take the matter up with Sprint's management.

"I am therefore writing to the chairperson of Sprint, Yusoff Daud, to convene a special board meeting to discuss and review the matter.

"I have also reported the matter to Menteri Besar Azmin Ali and will act on any further instructions given by him," he said.

Sivarasa was responding to social media postings that accused him, as a director of Sprint, of being responsible for the toll hike.

Sprint Expressway raised its fare by RM1, effective midnight, with the new toll rates at the Plaza Damansara, Pantai and Bukit Kiara toll booths now being RM2, RM2.50 and RM3.
