Selangor should make Sunday toll-free day, says DAP rep

The Selangor government should make Sunday a toll-free day for highway users to combat the price hikes caused by BN, a state assemblyperson said today.

Kinrara assemblyperson Ng Sze Han estimates that the state government can make this happen for the Sprint and Damansara-Puchong Highway (LDP), without any additional cost.

As a 20 percent shareholder in both highways, Ng estimates that Selangor earns RM27.6 million in profits, based on the RM138 million overall profit made by the two highways last year.

Estimating the total number of motorists on LDP and Sprint on Sundays to be around 13 million in a year, Ng ( photo ) multiplied this at a rate RM2.10 per vehicle to get a total of RM27.3 million.

Based on his calculations, he said, this would leave the state government with RM300,000 in profit on Sundays alone.

"Using this calculation, it means the implementation of a toll-free day is feasible and will benefit 13 million motorists each year," the Kinrara assemblyperson said in a statement.

This, Ng said, would be similar to Selangor's free water policy.

Ng had in 2013 proposed a toll-free day to the state assembly, but the motion did not get support.

Effective today, the toll rates on the LDP were raised from RM1.60 to RM2.10.

Rates at the Plaza Damansara, Pantai and Bukit Kiara toll booths on the Sprint Expressway are RM2, RM2.50 and RM3 respectively in contrast with the old rates of RM1, RM1.50 and RM2 respectively.
