Now 1MDB says it is under probe, hammers DAP
1MDB today acknowledged that it was being probed by the police after earlier claiming that the state-owned fund was not under investigation.
The company pointed to the police investigation in response to queries raised by DAP's Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua on 1MDB's leaked minutes which showed its management purportedly lying to the board.
"As DAP knows well, 1MDB is currently under investigation by the Royal Malaysian Police and the auditor-general.
"The investigations by the lawful authorities are the appropriate forum for the facts and truth to be established," it said in a statement today.
On Wednesday, 1MDB had noted that the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) had declined to prosecute 1MDB and rejected the investigation papers submitted by Bank Negara Malaysia.
It went on to say: "This confirmation by the AGC reinforces the statement by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Sept 22, 2015 that 1MDB is not under investigation."
Within hours, 1MDB's claim was rebutted by the MACC which said while it was not investigating the company, it did not mean the state-owned fund was free of investigation.
MACC further pointed out that the police were awaiting the completion of the auditor-general's report into the activities of 1MDB before concluding their investigation into the company.
1MDB, which is struggling to repay its US$11 billion debt, said it is assisting the National Audit Department for the completion of the report.
In the statement today, 1MDB did not provide answers to the questions raised by Pua beyond citing the ongoing investigation and instead accused DAP of trying to impede the company's rationalisation plan.
It added that an interim report on 1MDB by the auditor-general was already handed to the Public Accounts Committee of which Pua and another DAP MP Tan Seng Giaw were members of and both are aware a final report is due by year-end.
"We are therefore surprised that DAP seems intent on continuing to make a public spectacle of this, driven by what can only be assumed are political point scoring considerations.
"It is clear that their agenda is driven only by politics and is designed to frustrate and impede the implementation of the 1MDB rationalisation plan, towards which the company continues to make good progress," it said.
1MDB reiterated that it would provide full cooperation to all lawful authorities investigating the company.
"We have consistently maintained that if any wrongdoing is found, then action must be taken under the law," he said.
