DPM: Police can't verify if red shirts was Malay uprising

PARLIAMENT Police are not able to verify whether the Sept 16 red shirt rally was really about a Malay uprising, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

"Police do not know the real reason behind the red shirt rally, besides what has been said in their application to hold a rally.

"The main issue was on whether the place the rally was to be held was appropriate.

"As such, claims that the purpose of the rally was to show a manifestation of Malay (anger) cannot be verified," Zahid said in a written reply in his capacity as home minister.

Zahid was responding to a question from Lim Lip Eng (DAP-Segambut, photo ) on whether the rally was a manifestation of Malay sentiments that they have been "pushed to the wall".

Lim also wanted to know what court action would be taken against those arrested for racial provocation, hurting the police and slandering against DAP and its veteran leader Lim Kit Siang.

However, Zahid said he could not disclose these matters as they were still under police investigation.
