Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today tabled Budget 2016, his seventh budget since coming to power.
Malaysiakini compiles here the data of how Najib has budgeted the nation's expenses in the last seven years.
This is the first time the budget has contracted under Najib's leadership, from RM273.9 billion in Budget 2015 to RM267.2 billion in Budget 2016, due to shrinking revenue from low commodities prices.
Interestingly, development expenditure will continue to grow despite the smaller budget, from RM50.5 billion or 18.4 percent of the total budget this year to RM52 billion next year, or 19.5 percent of the total budget for 2016.
Development expenditure under Najib had fallen dramatically since 2010, at 27.8 percent of the total budget to a low of 17.6 percent in 2014, but has been recovering since.
Malaysiakini also compiles here budget data for key ministries since Najib became prime minister.
For Budget 2016, the Education Ministry still takes up a significant sum of the national budget, but the Higher Education Ministry will see heavy cuts compared to past years.
Despite the smaller budget, the Prime Minister's Department's allocation continues to grow, not only in quantum but also in proportion to the national budget.
