Activist Khalid Mohd Ismath was granted interim bail today by the High Court in Johor Baru, said former PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan.

However, the court also granted the prosecution the adjournment of the bail application to Nov 11.

The interim bail also comes with several conditions: Khalid must surrender his passport to the authorities and he must report to the nearest police station tomorrow and on Nov 10.

The interim bail was fixed at RM5,000 per charge, which adds up to RM70,000 for all 14 charges.

"We're trying to raise the bail, we are working hard to raise bail.

"RM70,000, you know, it's a lot of money. We hope to get him (Khalid) released today," Arutchelvan told Malaysiakini .

Khalid has been slapped with 14 charges - 11 under the Communications and Multimedia Act and three charges under the Sedition Act.

Previously, he had been denied bail for fear that he would flee the country.

Arutchelvan also said the police have given an assurance that they would not re-arrest Khalid.

"That is what we were worried about, but the police reassured us they would not (re-arrest him)," he said.
