Cops must stop raiding my office now, Zunar says

Political cartoonist Zunar told police they should now stop raiding his office after the Federal Court affirmed that there should be no ban on his two books ‘1Funny Malaysia’ and ‘Perak Darul Kartun’.

He said the apex court ruling today should also extend to all 16 of his titles.

The apex court today upheld the Court of Appeal’s decision to overturn the Home Ministry ban on the books, and told the government to return 33 copies of the books seized to Zunar.

“This is a victory for all cartoonists, it tells the Home Ministry and the government that drawing cartoons is not a crime,” Zunar said.

As such, he said the authorities should not take action against him under the Sedition Act, nor arrest or detain him for his work.

“Stop pressuring me and those involved in the production, printing and sale of my book.

“Stop raiding this my office, stop harassing my webmaster for selling the books online, and stop raiding and threatening printers and shops involved in the production and sales,” he said.

Other books seized

The books ‘1Funny Malaysia’ and ‘Perak Darul Kartun’ were published by Malaysiakini and Zunar’s firm Sepakat Efektif Sdn Bhd.

It was banned by the Home Ministry in 2010 for being a threat to public order, but the publishers challenged the ban in court.

In January, police seized 155 copies of Zunar’s books ‘Pirates of the Carry BN’, ‘Conspiracy to Imprison Anwar’ and its Bahasa Malaysia version ‘Konspirasi Memenjarakan Anwar’.

The next month, police seized 100 copies of another book , ‘Ros in Kangkung Land’ ahead of its launch in Petaling Jaya.

He was in April slapped with nine charges of sedition over a series of tweets on the guilty verdict against PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim in the sodomy case last year.

He is challenging the sedition charge.
