Amirudin Hizadin's star shone today when the ‘Mana Hilang 2.6 Bintang’ singer-songwriter performed his latest song in the presence former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
While the title of the song ‘Korupsi Kuku Besi’ (Corrupt Dictator) may see some members of the audience shifting in their seats, Amirudin told Malaysiakini that it is just a working title.
Amirudin said he is actually a great admirer of Mahathir and felt honoured by the invitation to perform at the second annual Malaysia’s War on Corruption Symposium.
“The lyrics and title of my newest song have yet to be finalised.
“I received an invitation from the organiser two days ago and I was told to compose a song that touches on corruption,” he said when contacted.
Following his performance, Amirudin said he was asked for the title of his song, so he made one up on the spot.
“Even the song and the lyrics are not finalised. I just finished it this morning,” he said, adding that it was just his general thoughts on the subject of corruption.
Mahathir was present to officiate at the symposium and deliver his keynote address.
“One of the last verses in this song was inspired by Mahathir’s own words, ‘perjuangan kita belum selesai’ (our struggle is not over),” he said.
“There should be no issue (on the title) because I had even openly told Tun Mahathir that I am inspired by his principles and charisma,” he added.
Amirudin’s ‘Mana Hilang 2.6 Bintang’ made references to the RM2.6 billion found in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's bank accounts and became a internet sensation with 394,000 views to date.
In an interview with Malaysiakini , the 23-year-old said he was just expressing his sadness about the state of the nation, and that he is apolitical.
Korupsi, sang kuku besi bila bertemu ilahi berita syurga kamu sendiri
Terkejar-kejar cari harta dunia
Hingga terlupa Tuhan Yang Maha Kaya
Rasuah sudah biasa darah dagingnya
masa dunia cita ingin dicapai
walau dijalan namun masih tak sampai
anak muda perjuangan kita belum selesai
Korupsi sang kuku besi bagi makan anak bini masuk ke poket sendiri
Korupsi sang kuku besi bila bertemu ilahi berita syurga kamu sendiri
Unrestrained power in your hands
For almost 20 years, Malaysiakini has stayed true to the cause of providing the Malaysian public with the truth. We believe that with unadulterated information, the people will obtain power to make informed decisions.
Decisions which lead to a healthy, robust nation - ours!
Keep the truth alive. Support your robust, independent media. You have the unrestrained power to do so.
Who says it's not our fault?
We aren’t trained to take responsibility.
Everytime we observe an injustice - and choose to keep mum - the prevalence of injustice becomes our fault.
Astute journalism paves the way for the public to be continuously furnished with the fastidious truth. You are continuously empowered to act and to uphold the integrity of the nation.
The Rakyat owns Malaysiakini
We choose to take a risk on independent media because we believe that only through independent reporting can one be NOT beholden to the interest of businesses or organisations. This allows us to really pursue the truth - aggressively.
Independent for 20 years.
The victorious people
In the light of holding the truth to power, Malaysiakini will continue to uphold its mission of providing credible news to its discerning public. Your support for Malaysiakini is always treasured as a testament of innate nationalism. Your victory is our history.
Quietly. Effectively. Says it all. Malaysiakini.
Speaking truth to power
When we embarked on this journey 20 years ago, we knew we would face intimidation, harassment, raids, arrests and perhaps even jail terms. We got into this venture with our eyes wide open.
The main reason we have survived this long - when many others have folded - is partly because we are prudent in our finances. But while we may be tightfisted in our budgeting, we do not hold back when it comes to speaking truth to power and holding power to account. And certainly, this new administration will not stop us from continuing to do so.
