In defending Najib, minister digs himself a deeper hole

YOURSAY | ‘In other countries, unaccounted wealth will be investigated.’

Minister: Dr M may see jail if lavishness is proof of corruption

Hopeful123: So if you see a police constable driving a Porsche and living in a multimillion ringgit house, you are not going to be suspicious?

We should take a leaf from Singapore where corruption is not tolerated. Nobody protects those who are suspected of corruption. And if you try protecting them, you will also end up in the cooking pot.

In Malaysia, it is different. Corruption is something to be proud of. The administration goes full swing to protect the corrupt ones. A few unlucky ‘ikan bilis’ (small fries) get jailed as eyewash.

Ipohcrite: Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak doesn't seem to have heard that under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act, any unexplained riches are deemed to be corruption monies. Ignorance is no excuse under the law.

N1: In other countries, unaccounted wealth will be investigated.

Only in Bolehland, all corrupt politicians in power can get away without being questioned by the relevant authorities.

Spinnot: Indeed, unexplained increase in wealth and changes in lifestyle (expensive houses/cars/jewelleries/clothes/holidays) are two of the major 'red flags' for fraud/corruption.

A 'red flag' indicates fraud/corruption may have been committed and calls for an investigation.

Hplooi: Salleh, the onus is on the accused to explain his or her wealth.

Unexplained wealth is considered an exception to the principles of 'innocent until proven guilty' by jurists in Commonwealth countries because the issue of corruption and unexplained wealth of public servants is perceived to perpetuate injustice in the system.

Almost all Commonwealth countries used this as a legal tool to fight against corruption (especially Hong Kong to great effect in the 80s against entrenched corruption in the colonial police force).

What degree did you obtain from Simon Fraser University, Salleh?

Anonymous 2305141436452229: What is Salleh on about? Former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad, daughter Marina and son Mukhriz, by all accounts, live fairly quiet and moderate high-middle income lifestyle.

Another son, Mokhzani, owns multi-billion ringgit companies and even then he doesn't show off.

PM Najib Razak is a career politician who shouldn't make more than RM500,000 a year and yet his stepson is funding multi-million US dollar films and buying multi-million dollar bungalows with only about 10 years of "investment banking experience"?

Clearly Salleh is missing the point, like he did when asked about Malaysia's slow but expensive Internet .

GE14NOW!: The stupidity of these ministers knows no bounds. Just when you think that these idiots have scrapped the bottom, in they jump with new spades to dig even deeper trenches of idiocy.

Such is the price the country has to pay for these mindless goons. But maybe I am wrong, maybe it is just them trying to outdo one another and show their boss who is more loyal and more stupid.

Quigonbond: Salleh is probably patting himself on the back as he was saying that. Yes, it's another stupid statement.

The issue of lavish lifestyle is not that it is a crime by itself - but it is evidence that points to corruption bar factors such as inheritance, or donation from a rich uncle.

Anon888: Salleh, the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits, so said Albert Einstein.

'What if M'sians want to keep Najib as PM?'

White Preacher: Salleh, you know you are going to get whacked by saying that. Please remove your blinkers.

The majority of Malaysians want Najib out except you. Most educated Umno members want him out, too. You can go to the streets to find out.

Anonymous 2006551440333206: I think the best way to judge whether Malaysians still want Najib to continue as PM is to hold a referendum now. Do you think he dares to do it?

Justine Gow: The only certain way to find out whether or not Malaysians still want Najib as PM is if and when that someone dares to dissolve Parliament and call for GE14 now. If he dares not, it's only talk.

The Analyser: Salleh has asked a good question. But perhaps the question should be: What if Najib is the only PM Malaysians are prepared to put up with?

Once again reality strikes home with the fact that there is no viable alternative, of the sort Malaysians might be looking for, on either side of Parliament.
