'Is Mahathir and Anwar set to reunite - in jail?'

As the battle against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak continues, one DAP leader has pondered whether former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad will once again reunite with his former deputy, Anwar Ibrahim - in jail, that is.

"Will Mahathir end up in a cell next to Anwar in jail after the shocking statement by Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak?" DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang ( photo ) asked.

He was referring to Salleh's remarks that Mahathir may end up in jail if living lavishly is a ground for incarceration.

This, Salleh said, was based on the lavish lifestyles of Mahathir and his own family.

Anwar is currently serving a five- year jail sentence at the Sungai Buloh prison on a sodomy conviction.

Mahathir had himself overseen Anwar's first imprisonment, after sacking his former protégé as deputy prime minister in 1998.

Another scenario Lim pondered was Anwar and Mahathir teaming up outside prison to save Malaysia.

"Is it possible for Mahathir and Anwar to team up in the higher interests of saving Malaysia from the 'perfect storm' of political, economic, good governance and nation-building crises gathering against the nation?

"(Can they) restore to Malaysians the self-confidence to be able to compete with the best in the world?" the Gelang Patah MP mused.

Lim said Malaysians must open their minds to such unthinkable scenarios because of the current 'abnormal' political climate.

This includes the various scandals surrounding Najib, which Lim said are causing economic turmoil in the country.

The ringgit is currently suffering a major tumble in line with international currency depreciations.

However, political and economic observers say the 1MDB scandal and Najib's dwindling popularity as prime minister, is causing Malaysia to suffer much worse than other countries.
