Who said seven? Could be more, says Tengku Adnan
Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor today hinted that the fate of more party leaders may be on the chopping block rather than the speculated seven.
"Who said seven? Could be more [...] I don't know," he was quoted as saying by Bernama in Putrajaya yesterday.
Previously, Tengku Adnan said that seven Umno leaders were on the watch list for disciplinary breaches.
He had said that they could face suspension or be removed from their positions in the party.
Tengku Adnan has refused to reveal their names but instead said the leaders themselves and even journalists should know who they are.
The ‘rebel’ leaders were widely to believed to include Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin, Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad all of whom have been critical of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Of the seven, Tengku Adnan claimed that Umno was ‘sick and tired’ with ‘thorns in the flesh’.
He also said the outcome of investigations by a technical committee will be presented to the Umno presidential council before being handed over to the disciplinary committee.
However, some Umno leaders, including Tourism Minister Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, have opposed any move to purge dissenters fearing that this could further unsettle the party.
