Singapore has raised its security alert and stepped up security measures in wake of multiple terror attacks in Paris yesteday which killed at least 158 people.

In a statement, Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmugam said, "In Singapore, today, we have raised our alert level. We have stepped up security measures, border checks and vigilance."

"These attacks show that no country is immune, even when there is a state of heightened security. Together, everyone plays a part to keep Singapore safe and secure.

"We encourage everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or persons to the authorities," he said.

Shanmugam, who is also law minister, said the attacks were aimed at striking fear in the community.

"We must therefore continue to build up our social resilience. This will ensure that if an incident were to occur here, we will stand together, recover quickly and emerge stronger and more united.

"Our deepest sympathies to the victims of the Paris attacks, and their families and loved ones. In this difficult time, our thoughts are with the French people. We pray for their recovery and that they will emerge stronger as a community," he said.

Meanwhile in Manila, the Philippines today vowed heightened security preparations ahead of an international economic summit in Manila next week in the wake of deadly attacks in France.

President Benigno Aquino said the country stands in solidary with Paris and condemns the series of attacks.

"In our time of need, France and her people stood shoulder to shoulder with the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan," he said in a statement. "We stand with France now, in the firm belief that the light must never dim in Paris."

Aquino added that security forces were "taking all necessary precautions" to ensure the safety of the public and leaders from Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) countries arriving in Manila next week for their annual summit.

"There is no credible threat registered at this time but let us all be cooperative and vigilant," he said.
