Heavy rain from noon to 1.30pm today triggered flash floods in Johor Baru and caused at least 20 cars to be trapped in the floodwaters, according to police.

Johor Baru Selatan Police chief ACP Sulaiman Salleh said floodwaters rose as high as 1.5 metres in some places, but no one was injured.

“Jalan Wong Ah Fook and several roads leading to Johor Baru City Square and Komtar JBCC shopping malls were flooded,” he said when contacted by Bernama .

Sulaiman said the police redirected traffic to alternate routes and controlled traffic flow.

One lane of Jalan Wong Ah Fook was reopened to traffic at 2.15pm after the floodwaters began to recede, he said.

According to Johor Works Department Facebook page, heavy rainfall with a full high tide occurring simultaneously resulted in the flash flood.

It advised road users who wish to go to the city to postpone their trip temporarily.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson of the Johor Department of Civil Defence said they were summoned to attend to the floods at 12.40pm, reports Bernama .

He said the department personnel were mobilised to 10 locations in the city to monitor the floods, including at Jalan Kolam Ayer, Jalan Wong Ah Fook and several nearby roads.

“The personnel also helped a woman in her 20s to get out of her car after she panicked when the vehicle got trapped in the floods in Jalan Wong Ah Fook,” he said.

Johor Baru Fire and Rescue operations officer Senior Fire Officer II Khairul Azhar Aziz said firemen helped three people trapped in their cars in Jalan Wong Ah Fook.

He also said that firemen conducted a search for people possibly trapped in cars at underground parking lots, including at Komtar JBCC, Public Bank and Merlin Tower.

The flooding comes after Syarikat Anak Johor told a delegation of opposition assemblyperson and other stakeholders yesterday that water levels at two major dams in the southern state remains below critical level.

Torential rain in Shah Alam

Torrential rain in Shah Alam also caused flash floods and traffic disruption.

Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia (LLM) advised North Klang Valley Expresseway (NKVE) and Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE) users heading to Shah Alam to take the Ebor/Subang exit because the Shah Alam toll area is flooded.

"Flash flood at KM 0 heading to NKVE Shah Alam toll. Route from Bukit Jelutong to Shah Alam is temporarily closed," LLM said in a tweet at 4pm.

There is also flooding in front of Citta Mall towards to Ara Damansara.

Motorists are advised to avoid the route from Subang Airport heading to Federal Highway, LLM said at 4.30pm.

It also reported a small landslide along the Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas).

"The left lane of Ramp D of Persiaran Kewajipan is closed due to land slippage at a slope. Clearing work is underway," it tweeted at about 3.30pm.

A landslide at Bukit Kutu blocked access road to the Pertak Orang Asli village, while water rose in Kampung Bukit Kerayong, Bandar Puteri, the New Pantai Expressway heading to Bangsar and the Middle Ring Road 2 near the Melati Shell petrol station, this afternoon.
