PARLIAMENT Enforcement agencies seized RM1.13 millon worth of counterfeit goods from digital mall Plaza Low Yat and street market Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur, from 2010 until September 2015.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Hamzah Zainuddin said this in a parliamentary written reply to Manan Ismail (BN-Paya Lebar).

Malay traders' groups threatened to rampage through the traditionally Chinese trading area Petaling Street during the Sept 16 Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu demonstration , claiming traders there sell counterfeit goods.

In June a race riot broke out in front of Plaza Low Yat, also located in a traditionally Chinese area, when Malay protestors claim ethnic Chinese traders sold a Malay youth a counterfeit mobile phone.

Hamzah said RM984,570 worth of fake goods were seized in Petaling Street, in 53 cases.

RM144,118 worth of fake goods were seized from Plaza Low Yat, resulting in 82 cases.

"The ministry always takes the matter seriously and is working to curb the sale of counterfeit goods in Petaling Street, Plaza Low Yat and the rest of the country.

"We welcome public assistance in reporting the sale of counterfeit goods to the authorities," he said.

During the Sept 16 protest, Gabungan NGO Malaysia chief Jamal Md Yunos brokered a deal with police to disperse an angry mob from the entrance of Petaling Street on condition that a raid be conducted on traders selling conterfeit goods there.

A subsequent protest planned there was called off when Jamal was arrested for threatening public order.

Several protesters and two police officers were injured in the standoff, which saw the Federal Reserve Unit fire water cannons to disperse the crowd.

Police arrested two protesters, whom they said tested positive for drugs.
