DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said police would do better to commit resources towards finding individuals wanted in the 1MDB probe such as billionaire Jho Low instead of going after "mentally unstable" people like Alvin Tan.
Lim said this was because the 1MDB scandal had wide implications on the Malaysian economy whereas Tan, who had desecrated the Quran, was a "disgraceful habitual offender" that could be dealt with by the US authorities.
"Even though Tan is not in Malaysia but in the US, there are hate laws there that can act on his desecration of the Quran.
"The Malaysian government should direct our embassy officials in Washington to lodge a police complaint for action to be taken under US laws against Tan," he said in a statement today.
Lim ( photo ) said it was shocking that police were not going after individuals wanted by the MACC and Bank Negara for the 1MDB and SRC International probes nor have they sought Interpol's assistance.
Low, along with SRC International executive Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil, are being sought by the MACC while former 1MDB executives Casey Tang Keng Chee and Jasmine Looi Ai Swan are wanted by Bank Negara.
"The police should be more aggressive and diligent in trying to trace these key personalities at the centre of the 1MDB scandal, especially Jho Low.
"Have the police contacted Low's family especially his father who was awarded a 'Tan Sri' title after the 2013 general election?
"The public cannot understand how the police still cannot trace and locate Jho Low when he is a well-connected millionaire out in the open, public view and not hiding like a terrorist," Lim said.
