As US President Barack Obama arrived in Kuala Lumput today for a three-day visit, a demonstration was held outside the US Embassy to protest against the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA).
The protest was organised by Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (Samm) and PSM.
Samm president and founder Badrul Hisham Shaharin, or better known as Chegubard, said they placed a memorandum on the ground as a sign of "disrespect to US".
"We do not respect the American government and we placed the memorandum on the ground outside the embassy," he said.
“Obama is a president to country which has declared itself as the world's police but in fact they are the father or king of all tyranny […] Malaysia has become the focus because he is here,” he said.
The memorandum was to protest the presence of Obama and the trade pact. About 20 protesters who turned up at the embassy carried placards describing the US as "killers"
Obama is here to attend the Asean summit.
Protest march tomorrow
PSM secretary-general A Sivarajan said Obama's presence in Malaysia was to have Malaysia sign the TPPA.
“PSM is protesting his presence as it is only to secure Malaysia's signature for the TPPA. That is the main purpose of his arrival here,” he said.
Badrul Hisham added that the protest was held to show the people's anger against the TPPA which would make Malaysia weak.
“We will be holding another protest at 2pm tomorrow and march from KLCC to Jalan Ampang. I believe and am confident that many will turn up tomorrow.”
“While Malaysia needs international trade, we should not compromise by signing the TPPA which will result in the country being weak. Malaysia has its stature and the agreement will affect the country's sovereignty,” he said.
