AirAsia boss says no pilot strike, just rostering issues

AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes denies speculation that the company is facing industrial action from its pilots after 13 reportedly called in sick , causing disruption to schedules yesterday.

He blamed it instead on a new rostering system.

“It was a freak day with the new system and 11 pilots were not well for night flights,” he told the Star Online .

He said there are no unions in AirAsia, so it could not have been a strike.

“I'm extremely proud of all my pilots who have been super professional. Everything is back to normal in KLIA2 today,” he reportedly said.

Hundreds of passengers heading to Kota Baru, Tawau, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai and Jakarta were stranded at the low-cost terminal last night.

Some flights were cancelled while others were delayed.

This comes after Indonesian investigators released findings that faulty plane components and crew mistake led to the crash of AirAsia Indonesia flight QZ8501 which killed all 162 on board.

The Airbus A320 crashed into the Java Sea on Dec 28, less than halfway into a two-hour flight from Indonesia’s second-biggest city of Surabaya to Singapore.

Investigators said a system controlling rudder movement had cracked soldering that malfunctioned repeatedly, including four times during the flight and 23 times the previous year.
