ERL defends fare rises
The Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) has defended the need to raise its fares in order to remain sustainable.
It said the fares for both the KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit services had remained unchanged since April 2002 despite rising costs of operations and maintenance.
“The ERL project was implemented at the cost of RM2.4 billion and the company has been suffering losses over the years, accumulating up to RM671.7 million.
“In July this year, ERL shareholders injected an additional capital of RM72 million into the company,” it said in a statement today.
ERL said the company had to further invest in new systems and train sets that would be progressively delivered from May 2016 to cater to its growing ridership.
ERL announced yesterday that from Jan 1 next year, the fare for a one-way trip between KL Sentral and KLIA/KLIA2 will be RM20 more at RM55.
