'Three black eyes on Parliament in just one day'

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang has described the events in Parliament yesterday as one of the "darkest days in history".

It is also a “shameful record” for Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia, who allowed it to happen despite his promise for reforms Lim said.

He pointed out that in just one day, the Dewan Rakyat witnessed Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak cop-out of explaining the presence of RM2.6 billion in his personal bank accounts.

This was followed by the persecution of Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar and finally, the passing of the National Security Council (NSC) Bill.

"It is to the eternal shame of speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia that so many shameful and disgraceful records could be set by the Malaysian Parliament in one day under his chair.

"How could the speaker allow the Umno-BN government to show such utter contempt and disrespect for Parliament, so as to allow (Deputy Prime Minister) Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to make a farcical and outrageous three-minute ministerial statement (on the RM2.6 billion)," Lim said in a statement today.

Zahid ( photo ) had said the government cannot elaborate on the matter as it would prejudice investigations after the government promised for more than six weeks that the "donation" money would be addressed.

Lim added that if indeed the excuse of "sub judice" was the reason cited by attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali to the government, Apandi should then resign.

"The second black-eye which Parliament inflicted on itself yesterday was the vindictive persecution of Nurul Izzah over the photograph of her with Jacel Karim.

"It is another shameful episode in the annals of the Malaysian Parliament: mobilising the brute majority of the government coalition, accusing and convicting Nurul Izzah of disloyalty and treason and referring her to the parliamentary committee of privileges to decide on what 'commensurate' penalties can be meted out to her.”

"If Nurul Izzah is guilty of treason, then charge her in a court of law. It is no business of Parliament to become a 'kangaroo court' to pass a motion to convict and refer her to the Privileges and Rights Committee on the commensurate penalties to be meted out to her – which is taking parliamentary abuses and excesses in Malaysia to new heights," Lim said.

'NSC Bill is to silence dissent'

Nurul Izzah faced flak for her photograph with Jacel, the daughter of Jamalul Kiram III, who ordered an attack in Sabah which left nine members of the Malaysian security forces dead.

Nurul Izzah had explained that the meeting was not deliberate and was only by chance as the human rights function was organised by the Philippine government.

Lim also described the passing of the NSC Bill – the third black eye – as the "Zimbabweisation" of Malaysia, quoting former Malaysian ambassador to Canada Dennis Ignatius.

"As Dennis has eloquently described it, the NSC Bill 'is more about consolidating power, silencing dissent, stifling the opposition and intimidating the people than anything else. It is power grab, plain and simple, the end game in Umno’s strategy to acquire absolute and total power'.

"How can the Malaysian Parliament inflict three black eyes on itself in just one day under a reforming speaker?" Lim asked.
