PAS ready to forget 'ancient history' if rivals uphold Islam

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said his party is prepared to forget "ancient history" if its opponents uphold the principles of Islam.

"In accordance with Islam, everyone must be given room to repent.

"The history of PAS' struggle proved that PAS can forget ancient history if they (opponents) accept the Islamic policies of PAS," he said in a statement today.

Tuan Ibrahim cited how PAS had worked with Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah when he led Semangat 46 in 1990 even though the Umno leader was responsible for engineering PAS' defeat in Kelantan before that.

Likewise, he said PAS had also worked with Anwar Ibrahim under Barisan Alternatif and Pakatan Rakyat even though the former Umno leader had clashed with PAS in the past.

He added that PAS had also previously worked with DAP even though the Islamic party was accused of betraying Malays and being a stooge of DAP.

"Even earlier than that, PAS had accepted as ally Parti Negara led by Onn Jaafar, the founder of Umno," he said.

Tuan Ibrahim added that PAS will continue to advocate that Umno abandon nationalism in favour of Islam even though he noted this had caused PAS to be discriminated against and expelled from BN in the past.

"Umno had been PAS' traditional enemy because of Islamic principles, not because of its name or members.

"What is there to lose if we return to the principles of Allah for the good and well-being of the people," he said.

'Half-dead lizard'

Tuan Ibrahim said Umno president Najib Abdul Razak's call for PAS to work with the party based on Islamic principles is similar to when former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad declared Malaysia an Islamic state as they were emulating PAS' policies.

However, he also noted that Najib was still being plagued by the RM2.6 billion issue and PAS would not want to carry a "half-dead lizard".

"The country needs to be saved from corruption, abuse of power, misappropriation, mismanagement and money politics which are thriving in the administration led by Umno that goes against Islamic principles," he said.

Tuan Ibrahim said Umno can return to Islam by first upholding justice.

This, he said, can be achieved if the government stops persecuting its political opponents.

He also urged the Umno-led federal government to stop discriminating against Kelantanese for supporting PAS by disbursing oil royalty funds due to the state and restore the East Coast Expressway project in the state.
