Kit Siang queries Adenan's wavering support for Najib

Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem's statement yesterday is an indication of his wavering support for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, said DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.

"Adenan's statement in the Sarawak state assembly is most interesting, for it is no more an unqualified endorsement but an indication of the chief minister's wavering support for Najib as the prime minister," Lim said in a statement today.

Yesterday, Adenan ( photo ) had reportedly said that the Sarawak BN is prepared to reconsider its loyalty to Najib if the latter is found to have committed wrongdoings in relation to 1MDB.

"I can give you assurance that if he is found guilty of 1MDB-related offences, then we might consider our loyalty to him," he had said.

Lim said this made the chief minister sound "brave and independent" to the people, unlike the other BN ministers.

However, he pointed out that such reactions are misplaced, as Adenan's words made it sound like there is a possibility that they will remain loyal to Najib, even if he is found guilty.

Adenan, and all other BN leaders nationally, should automatically forfeit their loyalty to Najib if the prime minister is found guilty of 1MDB-related offences, Lim said.

"Is there any room for doubt that this would be the case?" he asked.

Furthermore, Lim said he is confident that Najib will never be found guilty of wrongdoing as long as he remains the prime minister.

Citing the top five world's most corrupt leaders from international anti-corruption group Transparency International, Lim said none of them were found guilty of corruption during their time in power.

"Adenan's brave statement therefore means nothing at all, what Shakespeare said about 'full of sound and fury, signifying nothing'," he said.

Despite that, he said Adenan's statement is still noteworthy, and he wondered if other Umno or BN leaders would say the same thing.

Najib has been involved in the controversy surrounding 1MDB and the RM2.6 billion found in his personal accounts, though he has consistently denied wrongdoing in both these matters.
