Subra: PM to study amending laws to prevent unilateral conversion
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has agreed in principle to study whether existing laws need to be amended to prevent unilateral conversion of children, said MIC president Dr S Subramaniam.
"I brought up the issue again at the last cabinet meeting, and the prime minister has asked three ministers to speak to the attorney-general and look into the matter.
"He has also principally agreed to look at amendments on the existing laws to prevent unilateral conversion on children," Subramaniam was quoted as saying by The Star today.
According to Bernama , the minister said the committee has met with the attorney-general on this.
The PM instructed the committee to find an amicable solution to the issue, he reportedly said.
The appellate court had overturned on technical grounds a High Court decision quashing the unilateral conversion of Indira's three children by her now Muslim ex-husband.
The appellate court ruled that matters of conversion, and whether or not someone is a Muslim, is the sole jurisdiction of the syariah courts.
