The DAP will only contest in PAS-held seats where the party foresees its potential candidates can make a breakthrough in the Malay-rural votebanks, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said today.

He said this in response to PAS Ulama wing chief Mahfodz Mohamed who yesterday declared that the Islamist party has a right to contest in any seat contested by DAP and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah).

"We are not contesting in all PAS seats. We are only contesting in those seats where we feel that our Malay leaders are able to project themselves.

"So there will be a few seats," said the DAP secretary-general said.

Mahfodz had also reportedly said that PAS is no longer bound by any past agreements on seat negotiations involving DAP and PKR, after the dissolution of Pakatan Rakyat last year.

Commenting further, Lim agreed that PAS has a right to contest in any seat of its choice but this does not mean it is a good idea.

"If they want to contest in every seat, it's their choice. So we can see now who is the one who demonises and causes trouble," he said.

Asked on DAP's appointment of "coordinators" in two Selangor seats currently held by PAS, Lim declined to confirm if this means DAP will contest those seats in the 14th general election.

"We have of course expressed interest, but we are only looking at seats where I think we have a chance of achieving a breakthrough.

"I think we must also show confidence in our Malay members," Lim told reporters after launching the DAP Impian Malaysia truck in Subang Jaya today.

DAP earlier indicated its intentions to contest in eight seats currently held by PAS in Selangor, subject to further negotiations with PKR and Amanah.

The party had last month appointed DAP Youth member Syefura Othman as its coordinator for the Dusun Tua state constituency in Hulu Langat.

Similarly, it had also appointed Selangor DAP committee member Edry Faizal Edry Yusof as its coordinator for the Taman Templer state seat.

Selangor PAS commissioner Iskandar Samad had earlier this month said PAS intends to contest in 25 Selangor state seats in GE14.

PAS won in 15 of the 20 seats it contested in the 13th general election.

Two of its representatives have since quit to join Amanah.
