AG counters MACC director, says he consulted commission

Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali has refuted claims that he did not consult the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) before deciding to clear Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

This comes after MACC special operations director Bahri Mohamed Zain said AG did not call in anyone from MACC to discuss the high-profile cases.

Apandi today cleared Najib over the RM2.6 billion and SRC International Sdn Bhd's RM42 million from state-owned SRC International transferred into his personal bank accounts.

"We sent back the investigation papers for clarification and requested further clarification. This was in my minutes to them.

"On top of that, I would like to clarify that when I first received the investigation papers, I did communicate with MACC chief commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed via phone calls and the modern way of Whatsapp.

"I also spoke to MACC investigations division director Azam Baki. To say that I did not communicate with them after receiving the papers is not correct,” Bernama quoted him as saying.

In a statement yesterday, Bahri said that by convention, the attorney-general would have a discussion with MACC top executives or the investigating officer on high-profile cases before deciding whether or not to press charges.

He said he assumed that the AG is satisfied with the investigations as Apandi did not call in anyone from MACC on the Najib cases.

This was after the investigation papers were resubmitted to the AG, who returned them on Jan 22 for clarification on proposed action to be taken.

Earlier, whistleblower website Sarawak Report cited MACC sources as saying that the anti-graft body recommended no less than 37 charges against Najib.

This was denied by the MACC.
