Tabung Haji urged to hold transparent audit

Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar has urged Lembaga Tabung Haji to provide transparent information to allay fears about the state of the pilgrimage funds provider.

This was after a Bank Negara letter to Tabung Haji warning about its dwindling assets falling below its liabilities was leaked last week.

"To date, (Tabung Haji) chairperson Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim has not disclosed sufficient information to disprove the claim that Tabung Haji assets to liability ratio is 98:100.

"As the assets are less than the aggregate liabilities, according to Section 22 of the Tabung Haji Act 1995, Tabung Haji cannot declare dividends by law.

"Depositors deserve to know whether or not they will be granted dividends," said Nurul Izzah in a statement today. Abdul Azeez is Umno's MP for Baling.

The PKR lawmaker added that while Tabung Haji's financial report ending December 2015 has yet to be released, information such as the value of its quoted shares, properties, cash reserves, sukuk and assets value should be readily made available to the public.

"Tabung Haji’s chairperson should also know the total value of their members’ deposits.

"This list of information is one that should immediately be disclosed to dispel public concern and depositors’ fears," she said.

Nurul Izzah added that the current economic downturn has put the spotlight on Tabung Haji's investments and its financial woes appear to lend credence to the perception that its investments were not made responsibly.

Drop politcal appointees

"Moving forward, the Tabung Haji chairperson and chief executive officer must immediately address key concerns raised and be open to having a transparent audit to quell any doubt among depositors," she said.

Nurul Izzah said if Tabung Haji's top echelon did not want to do so, they should then resign.

She added that Tabung Haji's top officials should not be political appointees but capable persons with integrity.

Meanwhile, Amanah Youth vice-chief Mohd Fakhrulrazi Mohd described the Tabung Haji fiasco as Umno's betrayal of the trust placed in them by the Malay community.

"Clearly, Umno is collectively responsible for the losses in Tabung Haji.

"We urge Malay voters to re-evaluate their undivided support for Umno," he said.

He added that successful communities do not give blind loyalty to political leaders.
