After gag, Asri says religious scholars shouldn’t focus on the petty

Religious scholars should not merely focus on petty issues but should also pay attention in upholding good at “higher levels”, said Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.

For example, he said religious scholars should look into issues such as oppression, rights, the rakyat's burden and their future as well as upholding justice and combating corruption.

He added that this was considered a duty by the imams of Sunnah Wal Jamaah (Sunni Islam) throughout history.

“Religious scholars shouldn’t only collect funds for mosques but also to have the courage to defend the rakyat and country’s property.

“They should step up against environmental pollution and not only be concerned about mosque toilets, vape and smoking,” Mohd Asri said in a statement today.

Mohd Asri’s statement came after the Johor Islamic Affairs Department (Maij) put him on a ban list of religious speakers who are not allowed to speak in the state.

Maij had accused Mohd Asri of slandering the institution of muftis and maligning scholars of the Shafie Islamic school of thought.

However, the Perlis mufti has denied this, and accused Maij of slandering him .
