UTM coming up with best tools for teaching English, says Johor MB

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is conducting a study to identify the best way to empower teachers with English language tools to improve language usage among students.

Menteri Besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin said UTM was in its final stage of creating an effective 'Train the Trainers' programme which would be announced soon.

"We believe it is important to have a good command of the English language as it is a global language.

"As such, our children should master it so that they will not be left behind and miss out on future development opportunities," he said.

Mohamed Khaled was speaking to reporters after attending a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meeting at the Sekolah Kebangasaan Taman Rinting Dua, Johor Baru, today.

Through the 'Train the Trainers' programme organised by UTM, teachers will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge which they would then impart to students.

"With increased expertise gained from the training module for development, we hope this will achieve our goal," said Mohamed Khaled, adding the additional module would not disrupt existing practice.

He hoped the study would come up with the best teaching method for pupils to have a strong grasp of the English language.

English proficiency was seen to be one of the essential skills required for the younger generation to compete in a globalised world, he said.
