A Youth Parliament representative has proposed the decriminalisation of marijuana (ganja), stating that there are youths who do not consider it a drug.

"Ganja is not a drug […] I am merely expressing the opinion of youths that I meet at the grassroots," Muhamad Ridhwan Muhamad Rosli was quoted as saying by The Star .

The report was also retweeted by Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

Muhamad Ridhwan, who represents Selangor, was debating a motion on improving the country's drug laws.

"They say that ganja is legal in the US and Australia, which are part of the TPPA.

"If such, we should follow suit and be on par with them so as not to be against the TPPA," he added.

Muhamad Ridhwan stressed that he was not advocating for the legalisation of marijuana but merely wanted it to be regulated.

He pointed out that marijuana only comprised eight percent of all addictions while 60 percent was for morphine and 30 percent for heroin.

"If we supervise the use of ganja, the numbers (for marijuana addiction) could be reduced to zero," he said.
