Over 70 political leaders, heads of government agencies and members of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) around Miri attended the briefing session held by the Sarawak Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at a hotel in Miri, yesterday.

Sarawak MACC in a statement said the briefing was aimed at clarifying on the roles and functions of the commission in the fight against corruption to the local key communicators.

It was also aimed at educating the people to adopt a corruption-free culture, as well as gaining support from people from all walks of life in combating corruption.

“MACC is confident that through this programme, the people will understand the roles and functions of the MACC in implementing anti-corruption efforts and enhancing the high integrity culture,” it said.

In a separate statement, MACC deputy chief commissioner (prevention) Mustafar Ali said the MACC recognised the anti-corruption transformation efforts and public services system based on good governance being practiced by Chief Minister Adenan Satem.

Mustafar said he hoped that the commitment shown by the Sarawak leaders would be emulated by other state governments to increase the effectiveness of the systematic and ongoing anti-corruption efforts.

He said Adenan’s commitment had helped MACC to carry out the enforcement and

prevention measures as well as educating the public effectively.

In January last year, Adenan led his cabinet members to sign an integrity pledge making Sarawak the first state in the country to do so.
