Don’t drag us into Syrian conflict, Wan Azizah tells Putrajaya
Opposition leader Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has urged Putrajaya to disengage from any situation that may draw Malaysia into the Syrian conflict.
This is after Malaysian troops arrive in King Khaled Military City for a 20-nation military exercise led by Saudi Arabia.
Concerns have been raised that the show of military might may be linked to Saudi Arabia’s preparedness for a ground offensive in Syria but Saudi officials have not indicated as such.
Nonetheless, Wan Azizah, who is also Permatang Pauh MP, said Malaysia’s involvement in the military exercise is “very worrying”.
“This is because this military move headed by Saudi Arabia may bring about negative geopolitical ramifications, not only in terms of regional security in the Middle East, but also for Malaysia’s long-standing neutral status.
“I urge Putrajaya to review the best means for disengagement from any situation that may draw Malaysia further into the armed conflict in Syria.
“At the same time, Malaysia should refrain from participating in any military exercises related to the Syrian armed conflict, and particularly exercises that do not take place within the purview of the United Nations,” she said.
Wan Azizah said armed conflict is not to be trifled with, more so at a time when Malaysia’s economy is not doing well and is burdened by problems and scandals.
“Malaysia should not be involved in any military efforts in the Middle East so long as diplomatic means have not been exhausted.
“On the other hand, Malaysia should be resolute and proactive in proposing negotiations and discussions for a peaceful settlement in Syria and the Middle East.
“Only through a political solution through diplomatic channels can a sustainable and lasting peace be achieved,” she said.
Last Tuesday, Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said he will seek clarification over Malaysia’s involvement in the military exercise.'
He said Malaysia supported efforts to eradicate terrorism from a doctrine and ideology standpoint but was not prepared to get involved militarily.
“Military training does not mean we are directly involved in operations.
“Besides, I will not allow it,” he said.
