Poor leadership losing us our global accolades, says Raja Bahrin

The poor leadership Malaysia is now suffering from has caused it to lose its once vaunted accolades in the eyes of the world and is leading the nation further down the tragic path of no return, a Parti Amanah Malaysia leader says.

"What is clear is that Malaysia has long since lost its direction, be it on the international stage as well as domestically," Amanah's international bureau chief Raja Bahrin Shah lamented today.

"National leaders have shown poor leadership and have lost all credibility," the Terengganu prince added in a statement today.

Raja Bahrin cited Malaysia's involvement in military exercises in the Middle East as well as its seeming alliance with the United States as an indication of the country moving away from its once celebrated non-aligned policy.

"The main question here is, in the Middle East, what happened to Malaysia's policy of neutrality and non-alignment since the days of Tun Abdul Razak? The situation in the Middle East is clearly a proxy battlefield between the US and Russia.

"In the Asia Pacific region, why is Malaysia taking the stand of being closely allied with the US? Our involvement with the TPPA, for one, can be seen to be an anti-China, US-led economic block. Is this a wise move?" he asked.

Raja Bahrin also pointed out how Malaysia's wishy-washy policy on Syrian refugees, the fellow Muslims who are suffering, was undermining the nation's once solid international stature, especially among Islamic states.

One of the 'most corrupt nations'

He lambasted the government for claiming solidarity with the refugees and yet only looking to "pick and choose" who are allowed into the country, while non-Muslims nations are taking in millions of refugees, unlike Malaysia's decision to allow in only Syrian refugees who are professionals.

"Among Islamic countries, Malaysia has long since lost its status as the leading country in the OIC, as it was seen to be since the time of Tunku Abdul Rahman. Our status as an example of a modern Islamic state forged during the era of Mahathir has also been lost, with many now looking up to Turkey instead," he added.

What is left of Malaysia, Raja Bahrin lamented, other than the reputation of being one of the most corrupt nations, if compared with Third World countries from Africa, what more now, after having slid further down the ranking last year.

"Strangely, foreign nations and communities are more aware that this is happening to us, while the majority of Malaysians themselves are still comfortable and not aware of the destruction of our values and our nation, which was once admired by the outside world," Raja Bahrin said.

The well-known architect also posited that perhaps only when citizens from Bangladesh, Nepal, Indonesia and Sulu become the majority of Malaysians, would the country see a change of government take place.

This, he claimed, was because maybe only these foreigners could appreciate what we are taking for granted, since Malaysians are always distracted by subsidies, BR1M and empty shouts of " Hidup Melayu ".

"Sometimes foreigners can better see and appreciate what we have, rather than we ourselves. The tragedy is that, at that time, it may be too late for our future generations," Raja Bahrin warned.
