MACC denies gov’t disbanding its two panels

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission today denied media reports that the government is disbanding its two independent panels, namely the Operations Evaluation Panel and the Consultation and Anti-Corruption Panel.

Its chief commissioner, Abu Kassim Mohamad, in a statement today said the two independent panels were tasked to supervise MACC's running.

"The government is in the process of appointing members for both panels for the new term," said Abu Kassim.

The terms for members of both panels ended yesterday.

Yesterday, the outgoing panel members also paid a visit to attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali.

The meeting with Apandi was held after he had called off the meeting scheduled for Feb 18.

A source from the panels told Malaysiakini on condition of anonymity that they think it is unlikely Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will renew their terms, as they feels that Najib does not favour them.

This is speculated to be due to their calls for Apandi to review his decisions on MACC's recommendations on its investigations on Najib over the RM2.6 billion ‘donation’ and the RM42 million SRC International Sdn Bhd transactions.

The attorney-general had absolved the prime minister of any wrongdoing in these matters.

The two panels were formed administratively under the MACC Act 2009.
