Suspended Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to announce today whether he will stay with the party - or leave it.

Penang Institute fellow Wong Chin Huat believes it would be best for Muhyiddin to stay with Umno.

However, Wong said, if the former deputy prime minister sticks around, he'd best not be a stick in the mud.

"The best strategy is for him to go all out until they sack him," the analyst told Malaysiakini .

Muhyiddin was suspended as Umno deputy president at the Umno supremne council meeting last Friday, for continuously speaking out against party president Najib Abdul Razak.

However critics say that despite his criticisms, Muhyiddin has been mostly been a man of little action.

Wong ( photo ) said this would be a dangerous attitude to maintain if the suspended Umno number two wants to remain in the party.

"Playing it safe would be the most dangerous strategy because he will be forgotten," Wong said.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had quit Umno on Monday in protest agaimst Najib's leadership of the party and government.

Mahathir hoped Muhyiddin would follow his footsteps, but said it would be up to the veteran leader as to whether or not he wants to stay with the party to fight Najib.
