Umno info chief accuses Muhyiddin of coveting PM's seat

Umno information chief Annuar Musa has accused Muhyiddin Yassin of wanting to oust Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak so that he can take the top seat for himself.

"Ousting the leader to become president is not Umno's way, even though Muhyiddin may have succeeded in doing so with (former prime minister) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

"Do not be guided by the notion that by ousting Najib, Muhyiddin will have a chance to become prime minister with a deputy prime minister of his choice," Annuar said in a statement today.

Annuar, who is also Ketereh MP, said Muhyiddin had never been a vocal leader and questioned the suspended Umno deputy president’s "sudden" outspokenness.

"In my more than 25 years as an Umno supreme council member, Muhyiddin ( photo ) has not been someone who speaks much in the supreme council.

"This is a far cry from what he is trying to project (about having been vocal within Umno).

"Which is why many friends are puzzled why he is suddenly outspoken from outside (the party), including raising issues that he had never openly brought to the Umno supreme council.

"This gives rise to the perception that Muhyiddin is doing this because he has a personal agenda," he said.

'Playing to the tune of enemies'

Annuar cast doubt on the sincerity of Muhyiddin’s criticisms, adding that the Pagoh Umno division chief was playing to the tune of the Malay party's enemies.

Muhyiddin was removed as deputy prime minister in July last year for criticising scandal-plagued Najib.

He was also suspended as Umno deputy president, last week, for stepping up his criticism against Najib, including a claim that he was briefed on the prime minister's criminal wrongdoing.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was investigating RM42 million in deposits from state-owned SRC International, as well as another RM2.6 billion from an offshore account deposited into Najib's personal bank accounts.

Najib maintains he has not violated any law and attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali also cleared the prime minister of wrongdoing.

However, the MACC is appealing Apandi's decision not to prosecute.
