Pakatan Harapan today denied that it needs former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad to lead the opposition movement in its quest to topple Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

"No. That is not right. (Dr) Mahathir is not strong. He needs our help," said Opposition Leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail at a press conference at Parliament House.

She was responding to a question that Harapan was not strong to oust Najib and needs the former premier to remove Najib.

Meanwhile, Amanah Shah Alam parliamentarian Khalid Samad asked how many BN parliamentarians were with Mahathir.

It has been said that the nine-month old Harapan may have trouble making a comeback in the next general election following Anwar Ibrahim's five-year jail sentence.

Political commentators have opined that with Mahathir leading the opposition and civil society in an anti-Najib campaign as well as with the support of suspended Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin and vice-president Shafie Apdal, there is a good chance it would strengthen the opposition movement in the next polls.
