PARLIAMENT PKR has proposed the setting up of a truth and reconciliation commission to uncover past wrongdoing of the government so that the country can move forward.

The proposed commission will work on issues, particularly the conviction of PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim and the RM2.6 billion donation that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had received in his bank accounts.

The proposal was mooted by Opposition Leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail at the Dewan Rakyat today when debating the royal address.

"I proposed a truth and reconciliation commission be set up. This is because in order for the country to move forward, we must reach a reconciliation...

"This is a small price to pay compared to a heavier one if the country refuses to change its course," she said.

"Najib has failed to govern the country. He should take responsibility for the 1MDB scandal, which had tarnished the country's image.

"However, this is not about changing a prime minister only; this also (about) bringing reforms to the system so that our dignity can be restored," she added.

Her proposal was backed by PKR lawmakers Tian Chua (PKR-Batu), Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin (PKR-Bukit Katil) and R Sivarasa (PKR-Subang).

Sivarasa suggested the commission also look into Anwar's jail conviction.

Such a commission had been set up in South Africa where those who had committed murder and torture under the apartheid regime came out to confess, he added.

Chua said the commission will be the best method to solve the current stalemate in the government as it will encourage leaders and officers to reveal the contents of classified documents, particularly on issues related to 1MDB and corruption.

Meanwhile, Shamsul hopes that the commission will not sweep whatever (wrongdoing) committed by the prime minister under the carpet.

"(We must) bring justice to the people," he said.

In a related development, Wan Azizah urged all parties to have the political will, courage and conscience to create a national consensus framework.

“We must change the national political discourse and principle. We must change any prejudice,” she said, adding that Malaysians deserve as a better nation.
