Watson Nyambek now grateful for media glare on bankruptcy

Initially upset over media coverage of a bankruptcy notice against him, Malaysia’s fastest man Watson Nyambek is now grateful for the concern many have shown over his financial woes.

The Malaysian 100 metres sprint record holder said financial assistance is in the works.

Watson was declared bankrupt after failing to make repayments for a bank loan he took out pay for his father’s cancer treatments.

The bankruptcy notice published in the Borneo Post by the Insolvency Department said he took out a bank loan of RM80,000.

Following media coverage, Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem said the Sarawak government will assist the sprinter.

“I can’t comment further (on the assistance). It’s in the process. I am grateful that many have supported me,” he told Malaysiakini today.

Watson, a Sarawak native, also hinted that he will not go through with plans to take legal action against a reporter over an article which first brought the bankruptcy notice to mass attention.

“As for the reporter, let it be,” said Watson, who ran 100 metres in 10.3 seconds in 1998.
