'Australian journalists should have waited for press conference'

Sarawak Tourism Minister Abang Johari Tun Openg is confident foreign tourists will continue to be lured to the state by its natural beauty and friendly people.

He said the incident where two Australian journalists were detained for allegedly breaching a police cordon in attempting to interview Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak during his walkabout at Kampung Haji Baki, two days ago in Kuching, would not scare them away.

This was despite some unfriendly publicity generated online by the incident, he added.

Abang Johari was met by the media after receiving 25 tonnes of daily neccessities and school aids from ASTRO community affairs director Datuk David Yap at the Merpati Jepang Community hall today.

ASTRO, through its ASTRO Kasih and with co-operation of ERA fm, hitz fm and MY fm radio stations had run a week-long campaign to appeal to the public to help the recent flood victims in the Kuching Division.

On the two journalists, Linton Besser, 39, and cameraman Louis Eroglu, 51, from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Abang Johari said they should have waited for a press conference to interview the prime minister.

Meanwhile, he hoped more corporate bodies would emulate ASTRO in carrying out its corporate social responsibility.
