Umno is not worried about former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and suspended party deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin's influence, said BN Backbenchers Council (BNBBC) chief Shahrir Samad said.

"You think we do nothing else than worry about this?

"We have been working since day one, we know things will come to pass," Shahrir when asked how much influence Mahathir and Muhyiddin has on Umno members.

Mahathir and Muhyiddin are currently waging war on Umno president and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Shahrir, however, said the party's machinery remains strong and will keep moving forward.

He also believes that the 1MDB and RM2.6 billion donation scandals plaguing Najib now won't be an issue in the next elections.

"I am confident it won't be an issue. In fact, I think the most important thing is to wait for the PAC report," he said.

He is also confident that if BN keeps its promises, it may do even better in the next election.

BN's election results have been falling since the opposition denied the ruling coalition its two-thirds majority in the House in 2008.

In the 2013 polls, the opposition even managed to deny the government the popular vote.

Najib, however, has maintained a firm grip on the government and despite his scandals, has successfully staved off attempts to topple him.

It is likely that the battle waged by his opponents will drag on till the next election, slated for 2018.
