Government officers should not serve in key positions for more than a few years in order to prevent abuse of power, said Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

"Limit it to two or three years. After that promote them or transfer to a different ministry.

"This will prevent them from becoming too familiar with a position that it leads to abuse of power," Shabery said when met at the Parliament lobby today.

He added that the matter would be raised in the next cabinet meeting.

He said this when asked to comment on the arrest of a Youth and Sports Ministry officer accused of being part of a syndicate that misappropriated RM100 million in state funds.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission had revealed that it has arrested nine persons on March 17, including the 56-year-old division secretary, who is said to have masterminded the scheme and pocketed RM20 million in kickbacks.

The group is said to have been active since 2010.
