DAP hits back at MCA for silence on 1MDB as bungalow row brews

A DAP leader has hit back at MCA for "double standards" over the latter's silence over Prime Minister Najib Razak and the 1MDB scandal.

DAP national vice-chairperson Teresa Kok in a statement today slammed Selangor MCA Wanita chairperson Ong Chong Swen for training her guns on Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's bungalow purchase.

"I wish to ask Ong, why is it that when so many right thinking Malaysians feel that the prime minister should be more accountable for the 1MDB scandals, MCA leaders have behaved as if it is not an issue at all?

"Why are MCA leaders so lame and silent on the 1MDB scandals, yet so aggressive on pursuing the bungalow purchase issue? And what has Ong personally commented on the 1MDB scandal?" asked Kok.

"MCA leaders’ aggressive pursuit of the bungalow issue in fact exposes their cowardice and double standards," said the Seputeh MP.

Ong yesterday criticised Kok for saying the issue of Lim buying his Penang bungalow purportedly at below market price as being " no big deal ", but the opposition MP would be quick to criticise BN leaders.

Faith in Lim's track record

Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general, has denied any wrongdoing in the bungalow purchase while the seller has also issued a statutory declaration on the matter.

The purchase is being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Kok said she had faith in Lim based on his past performance.

"The simple fact is this: I trust my colleagues who have excellent track records, something MCA leaders like her and her colleagues in BN do not have.

"Track records and integrity are undervalued in a party like MCA which places overvalued importance to things like propping up Umno and being minions in a dysfunctional government," she said.

The MP added her comment that it was not a big deal was based on the context that the discount is not mala fide, pointing out that Ong's allegations are based on "suspicions unsupported by any facts".

"Ong and her MCA colleagues should show that they are brave to call on the prime minister to be more accountable before picking quarrels with those who are trying hard to get Malaysia off the world's map of shame for corruption," she added.
