Here’s a recap of major headlines yesterday you may have missed.

Mahathir on Tengku Razaleigh's 'betrayal'

Former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad took centrestage yesterday as he accused Umno's Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah of betrayal after the latter made a U-turn on his proposal to oust Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Mahathir turned to opposition leader Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, stating that he was willing to talk to her about ousting Najib.

In his first public appearance since suing Najib for breach of fiduciary duties and misfeasance in public office, Mahathir warned that rule of law in the country would be dead if his suit is thrown out.

Umno men shy to bash DAP

Figures such as former Umno president Mahathir Mohamad and Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin would traditionally bay for blood when the opposition is embroiled in controversy.

But Mahathir's new cooperation with the opposition against Najib has seen him exercising restraint as he dismissed calls for Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to go on leave pending probe into his RM2.8 million bungalow purchase.

Khairy too was less than enthusiastic about sniping at Lim, stating that it was up to the chief minister to decide whether he wants to go on leave or not.

The restraint is likely because Khairy is also having to deal with his own controversy as over RM100 million was embezzled from his Youth and Sports Ministry, which he was not keen to talk about.

Penang CM knows the value of his property

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng clarified that he knows the value of his bungalow that he bought for RM2.8 million was worth RM4.2 million, and that when he said "don't know", it was in reference to Umno's claim that it was worth RM6.5 million.

Both Guan Eng and his father Lim Kit Siang made an impassioned stand that the bungalow controversy was a ploy to distract from BN's scandals.

Other Kini bites

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said the shooting incident at KLIA did not involve M16 rifles.

The Road Transport Department said that government vehicles accompanied by police outriders would be spared speeding summons .

Fortune magazine hailed Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown in their Top 50 greats for her expose on 1MDB.

1MDB says it will announce its other debt payments within two to three weeks.

Looking ahead

All eyes will be on the People's Congress to be held in Shah Alam today, which will see a gathering of establishment and opposition forces that have united against the prime minister.

Meanwhile, the anti-bauxite marchers from Kuantan are also expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur through Sentul after 15 days of travel. They are expected to march to Parliament on Monday.
